What is the Green Saudi Arabia initiative?

What is the Green Middle East initiative?

It is a regional initiative that aims to coordinate efforts to aim the global goals of struggling climate changes by increasing the efficiency of hydrocarbon technologies in the Region and launching the largest reforestation program in the world by planting 50 billion trees in the Middle East and as a result reducing carbon emissions.

To achieve these goals, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will work in partnership with the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council states, the Middle East countries and other interested countries and organizations. Saudi Arabia will hold an annual summit called the Green Middle East initiative to discuss the details of the initiatives and their implementation mechanisms because KSA is fully aware of the challenges facing the Region due to water scarcity, financial and technical resources and geographical difficulties. Saudi Arabia is ready to help resource-poor countries by sharing technologies and experiences to reduce carbon emissions and develop innovative methods for irrigation using processed water, rainwater and others, and finding other solutions.

In this context, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has implemented a comprehensive restructuring of the environmental sector, created special forces responsible for environmental safety in 2019, increased the coverage of nature reserves from 4% to over 14% of the area of the Kingdom, increased  the vegetation in the Kingdom by 40% over the past 4 years, achieved the best level of carbon emissions for oil-producing countries, successfully produced and exported 40 tons of blue ammonia as part of the search of innovative solutions to produce clean energy and launched one of the world's largest green hydrogen projects in the city of Neom worth 5 billion US dollars, with a daily production of about 650 tons.
