Oksana Bereznyak: when organizing exports, it is better to entrust the addressing of logistical issues to the operator who has already positively proven himself on the market.

Head of the Sea Transportation Department of ZAMMLER Logistics Companies Group described in detail about the delivery of cosmetics to Canada.

Options for delivering products to Canada

The most appropriate ways to deliver cosmetics from Ukraine to Canada: Container transportation, consolidated shipments, and air transportation.

Features of delivery of cosmetics and hygiene products

When exporting, you should pay attention to the following points:

— temperature mode

A lot of cosmetic products require the support of a certain temperature regime, usually a lowered temperature, but not too low. The temperature of +10 degrees Celsius is usually recommended for cosmetics transportation. The vast majority of cosmetic products must not be cooled below the indicated temperature. Many products lose their useful properties when exceeding the permissible temperature also. Thus, in the first place, you should pay your attention to the climatic potential of the carrier’s transport. Mostly you should use transport with a refrigerator for the transportation of cosmetics, which allows you to maintain the necessary temperature and humidity at the uniform level for a long time. For transportation at short distances, you may use isothermal bodies, and for far distances the refrigerated container will fit.

— Insurance

Given the specificity of the product, at several stages of delivery of which it can undergo different procedures (repackaging, loading and unloading, temporary storage in the warehouse, delivery of the product by several types of transport to the destination, inspections performed by customs authorities, etc.), this type of product is desirable to be insured. This will reduce the risks associated with the financial losses, namely: robbery, losses, damage to the product, shortage, etc.

Particular attention should be paid to the transport of dangerous, flammable, and fragile products. There are many types of cosmetics containing alcohol or other flammable substances. Therefore, the carrier company must have all the necessary knowledge about the rules for the carriage of such dangerous products. For the integrity and preservation of all useful properties of many cosmetic products, they are packaged directly into glass containers, which also requires special attention and care from the carrier. In carrying of this kind of packaging, it must be marked with the necessary symbols and signs and also reliably secured in accordance with the safety regulations.

Packaging of cosmetics and hygiene products when forwarding goods

When poor product packaging quality (when the manufacturer saves time/place in the container), water evaporation, evaporation of alcohol, other solvents, evaporation of aromatic substances, spillage, breakage, increasing viscosity, hardening, odour weakening (of synthetic substances), odour changes (of natural substances), colour changes, spoilage of ingredients, etc., can take place.

Documents circulation for export cosmetics to Canada

Many cosmetic products require additional permits, certification in the region of delivery, accompanying documentation for dangerous products, etc. A professional carrier company should always inform in advance about a set of documents that must be drawn up for products transportation. This is especially important in cases of crossing the state border when customs clearance takes place.

What problems can arise when shipping a product?

  • low-quality packaging
  • incorrect allocation of products inside the vehicle
  • non-marked products (despite transportation requirements) or mistakes in marking
  • absence of a warehouse for products
  • unclaimed trademark
  • absence of the declared volume and weight of products in the package
  • non-compliance with the temperature regime
  • non-compliance with the safety factor for the transportation of dangerous products
  • prohibition of the carriage of certain groups of cosmetic products on certain types of transport (for example: aerosols cannot be transported by air), and others.

Oksana Bereznyak also emphasized that when organizing exports, it is better to entrust the addressing of logistical issues to the operator who has already positively proven himself on the market. It is desirable that the company be a 3PL operator, it could organize transportation of products by any mode of transport, and also provide customs-brokerage services.
